    • BURKET BROS.

Homemade Turkish Candy" is the suggestive mouth-watering sign on the window of a brand new candy store at 67 Frederick St. This store is the property of Burket Bros. and is one of the most inviting stores in Berlin. Mr. Alex. Burket, the manager, comes from London where he gained a large behind a large experience behind the counter. He is courteous, popular and the right man in the right place. An expert candy maker is employed and he is truly an expert, if one can judge by the toothsome confectionery that comes from his hands. One particularly fine candy is "Turkish Delight," a brand which every epicure should sample. Candy sold here is made fresh every day and all of it, from the pan products to the finest bon bons, is right up to the standard. A wholesale and retail business is done. Mr. Chas. Burket is on the road most of the time selling from his wagon. He has held a license in Waterloo County for the past five years and is widely known and esteemed throughout the county.

      GOES BEFORE THE JURY

CHARLES BURKETT WILL BE TRIED AT DECEMBER ASSIZES

Chas. Burkett, the Syrian charged with the theft of $547 from the Berlin Robe Co, appeared before Judge Chisholm in the Judge's chamber this morning, and through his counsel. Mr. W.M.Reade, elected to be tried by a jury in the General Sessions in December.

The prisoner's counsel made application for bail, but Crown Attorney Bowlby would not consent to it, maintaining that this was no case for bail, as the prisoner had run away and had endeavored to cross the border but was stopped, owing to an affliction of his eyes. Mr. Reade contended his running away was purely a matter of suspicion. The Crown replied the Courts of Justice could not approve of bail being given in this case.

Heated words followed between the Crown and Mr. Reade.

"Everything is outrageous if things don't go your way." replied Mr. Bowlby.

In answer to a question from the Crown, whether bail would be given without his consent. His Honor, replied he could not consent as it was contrary to his practice.

The punishment for offense with which the prisoner is, charged, under section 1052 of the Criminal Code is five years or less.

The prisoner was remanded to the County Jail where he awaits trial at the General sessions, which open on December 6th.

The authorities have got track of Burkett's partner. Joseph Abraham who is wanted for the alleged theft of $1400, and expect he will also be apprehended.

A great deal of interest is being attached to the case by the Syrian element of the town.

      __________

      Burkett Loses Action.

Without calling on counsel for the defendant, the Divisional Court at Toronto on Wednesday, dismissed the appeal by Charles Burket from the trial judge's decision dismissing his action for $2.000 damages for false arrest and malicious prosecution against the Berlin Robe and Clothing Company. Walter Barrie and John Richardson, Burket was charged by the defendants with stealing some money and goods from them, but was acquitted at the trial. He therefore brought suit. The defence showed, however, that they had supplied Burket with goods to the value of over $1,900 on the condition that the title remained with the company and that he should either give an accounting of the goods or their value. Return was made for all of the goods except $358.50 worth, and the theft charge was brought respecting this sum. A counter claim for $358.50 was allowed, and the action and appeal dismissed.
