Notes |
- A sad accident occurred in the yards here Tuesday evening when Mr. Benning, an elderly man, lost his life in attempting to cross the tracks just north of the upper crossing. Mr. Benning stepped out of the way of an approaching engine and in doing so got in front of some cars that were switching. A couple of tramps who were sitting on some ties nearby shouted to warn him of his danger, but the old man was deaf and did not hear them. He was knocked under the wheels and was terribly mangled. His neck was broken, his left jaw crushed, his left arm cut off and his chest was crushed breaking several ribs. Death must have been instantaneous. He was taken to the morgue and the inquest held Wednesday resulted in a verdict of accidental death. Mr. Benning is survived by a wife and several grown daughters. His funeral took place Thursday afternoon, Rev. Gray of the Fourth street M. E. church conducting the services.
