  1 King Street West, Kitchener, Ontario    Roat's Commericial Hotel was destroyed by fire in 1892. It was a white framed building and stood on the northwest corner of King and Queen Streets, first built by Fred Gaukel in 1835. That corner has been a hotel site ever since the days of Phineas Varnum. After the destruction of the landmark, Abel Walper of Zurich, Ont., bought the site for a large red-brick hotel.  Before he began operations, he offered to sell the town a triangular strip, with a fourteen foot base in King Street, to straighten the job at the intersection of King and Queen Streets, for $500. The council accepted his offer but there was so much public criticism of the price that the plan was dropped. Two generations have since worn out shoe leather going around the corner. Mr. Walper completed his hotel in 1893 and named it the Walper House. At first the big hotel was managed by his son, C. H. (Currie) Walper.
