      _______________

'Friendship' Type Favorite Of Hawkesville Quilt Maker

Fine knitting may tax the powers of some octogenarians but it no terrors for Mrs. Sophia Ottman Mount Hope street, who marked her 84th birthday today, and whose chief leisure-time employment is still the knitting of lace to edge pillowslips or to insert in luncheon cloths. In a chat with The Record at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Henry Weiler, with whom she resides. Mrs. Ottman was diffident about discussing her knitting. It is improbable that it would have been mentioned at all had it not been for the presence at the interview of Mrs. Ottman's granddaughter. From this source it was learned that not only is Mrs. Ottman a knitter of superlatively fine lace but that in addition she is a champion quilt maker.

      MAKES NINE QUILTS

"I have 13 quilts of my own, and grandmother made nine of them," the granddaughter reported.

It then developed that Mrs. Ottman has made "stacks" of quilts for all her grandchildren.

For designs she usually consults modern quilt pattern books, but frequently she makes her creations according to to the designs she learned as a girl. Among these a favorite is the "friendship" quilt, which is blocked around a central white cross, upon which the owner preserves the autographs of her friends.

Mrs. Ottman, before her marriage to the late Mr. John Ottman, was Miss Sophia Hilker, and she was born on a farm about 3 1/8 miles from the village of Hawkesville. In those days Hawkesville was a flourishing small town, Mrs. Ottman recalls, with three stores, a shoe shop, a blacksmith shop a woollen mill, a drug store and three doctors.

      HUSBAND A SHERIFF

Mr. Ottman was the sheriff and among her possessions Mrs. Ottman still has a pair of the handcuffs it was his duty to use.

Mrs. Ottman was one of a family of 10 children and her father died when she was a small girl. As a result her childhood was not a pampered one. But she has no regrets over that fact.

"I always worked hard," she comments, "but it didn't do me any harm."

At 84 Mrs. Ottman is still in good health and is still keenly interested in the activities of her children and grandchildren.

In her own family she has two children, Mr. Alvin Ottman of Hawkesville and Mrs. Henry Weiler, Mount Hope street. She has six grandchildren.

Her birthday was observed today with a family dinner party at which birthday cake was the special feature.
