    • Sad Drowning of Two Kitchener and Waterloo Girls

A most distressing and sad drowning accident occurred last Friday afternoon in connection with the annual picnic of the staff of the Mutual Life Assurance Company of Waterloo, in which Miss Gladys Hohmeier, aged 19, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Hohmeier, of Kitchener, and Mrs. Edna L. Kaufman, aged 20, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Kaufman, of Waterloo, were the victims.

The sad fatally occurred in the Grand River at the farm of Eugene Pequegnat, 1½ miles east of Breslau, where the picnic was held.

A number of girls had gone in bathing and Miss Kaufman and Miss Hohmeier started to wade across the river and got beyond their depth and sank, being unable to swim. The other girls were also unable to swim and could render no assistance. The bodies were recovered in twenty to thirty minutes [unreadable] Kitchener pulmotor which was summoned worked over them for an hour but without avail.

Both young ladies were highly thought of and their sad death cast a gloom over the Twin City. They were both the only daughter in the family and are survived by their parents and four brothers each.

The funeral of Miss Kaufman took place on Monday afternoon and that of Miss Hohmeier on Tuesday
