Notes |
- The Albion Hotel.
In writing up the business interests of a village or town, the hotels are fully entitled to a fair share of the good things to be said. A first class hotel has much to do with keeping up a respectful reputation abroad for any community, for the traveller will avoid as much as possible in prolonging his visit where inferior hotel accommodation exist. Wellesley village is especially fortunate in being free from the latter class. The Albion is one of the oldest hotels here, and has had quite a number of landlords in its time. Prior to its coming into the possession of its present proprietor, Mr. John Mayer, it was kept for five years by the well known hotel man of Elmira, Mr. Thomas O'Donnel. Mr. Mayer is sole owner of the property, having conducted it for about eleven years. He was born in Buffalo in 1855, but came to Canada with his parents when he was only about one year old. He lived in Hamburg for a period of twenty-three years. For years prior to coming here he and his brother-in- law, Mr. John Buckle, jr, conducted the Imperial at that place, which under their management enjoyed a wide reputation as a popular resort for the travelling public. Mr. Mayer is decidedly an all round hotel man, and consequently is enjoying a fine commercial patronage. His weight is 260 pounds, but he is well proportioned
He is invariably in good humor, yet he strictly prohibits anything of a disorderly nature from existing upon his premises. Though constantly handling it, he does not indulge to excess in liquor an admirable feature in a hotel man that is not always the case. His tables are always supplied with the best in the market. Every nook and corner in the house is scrupulously clean. There is shed and stable room for one hundred horses.

JOHN MAYER DEAD.
His [illegible] friends in Wellesley and this section will be pained to learn of the death of John L. Mayer which occurred at his home in the Market hotel, Waterloo on Thursday last in his 53rd year. Mr. Mayer was born in New Hamburg, but at a very early age was brought to Wellesley village by his parents and spent most of his school days here. In his youth he worked for some years as a carpenter but later on he purchased the Albion hotel in this village where he conducted a model and successful business for many years, finally selling out to the present proprietor Mr. Kruetzweiser. Deceased had been affected for some years by heart disease which grew much worse of late so that he had to use the utmost care to prevent a sudden collapse. His sterling personality and integrity gained for him the respect and friendship of all, while his strong business qualities helped in a large measure the growth and prosperity of the village. Mrs. Mayer and the children have the sympathy of their hosts of personal friends in this section.
