  THE HAMBURG BRICK & TILE YARD Of no inconsiderable importance to New Hamburg is the brick and tile yard owned by Mr. Fred Schaefer, the well-known brick and tile manufacturer of Breslau, where he also owns a yard. Mr. Schaefer's name in itself is a guarantee of a high standard of quality in the brick turned out. Long experience, combined with close observation and attention to business, have long since placed him in the front rank among clayworkers. The clay in this locality produces a superior white brick unexcelled for building purposes. Three years ago the present proprietor purchased the New Hamburg yards and at once proceeded to remodel everything. The latest brick-making machinery was installed and two new kilns erected. These kilns are worthy of more than passing notice. They are round, Mr. Schaefer's judgment leading him to consider this kind of kiln superior to all others. Coal is used as fuel and the best results in burning are uniformly obtained. The motive power is a 40 h. p. engine and the yard is capable of running from 6,000 to 8 ,000 brick and 10,000 three-inch tile per day. The tile is marketed in the surrounding district but the brick goes farther afield, being in demand in many towns and cities far distant from New Hamburg. The yards are under the capable management of Mr. Geo. Schaefer, the proprietor's son.
