Notes |
- The Christadelphian Meeting House, Doon, Waterloo Township -- 1889-1916
A meeting was held by the Doon and Blair Christadelphian Ecclesia, or congregation, on March 13, 1889, to consider the purchase of McGarvey's Hall in Doon for use as a Christadelphian Meeting House.
The Christadelphians, a Christian sect, were originally called 'Thomasites' after their founder, John Thomas (1805-1871). The organization came into being in the United States in 1848. Christadelphian, meaning Brethren of Christ, was preferred by Thomas instead of that of Christian. Christadelphians believe in the infallibility of the Bible, and in baptism by immersion. They reject the doctrine of the Trinity.
When the Doon and Blair Christadelphian Ecclesia met to discuss purchase of McGarvey's Hall on March 13, 1889, the proceedings of the meeting, and of subsequent ones, were recorded in a small book. The book belonged to George G. Trussler, the great-grandfather of one of our members, Helen Stover. Copies of pages from the book, which were sent to the Branch by Mrs. Stover, are in the Grace Schmidt Room, Kitchener Public Library.
The following individuals were present at that first meeting: John Tilt, Joshua Pedder, George G. Trussler, T.R. Hardy, George Bullock, John Mathews, George Dymond, Joseph Welch, John Cosens, and D. Cole. It was agreed that Joshua Pedder, George G. Trussler, and D. Cole would be a committee to arrange purchase of the Hall. It was agreed also to spend up to $600 to cover the building with brick -- red brick with white corners -- and to make necessary repairs.
Subscriptions were pledged by individuals toward raising the necessary funds. Those persons listed in the previous paragraph were on the subscription list as were William Harris, Mrs. Watson & Phoebe, H. Cole, D. Harris, Mr. Hamm, Oscar Trussler, James Trussler, Gilbert Trussler, John Renshaw, William Hagger, William B. Hewitt, Albert E. Trussler, and Herman Cole.
The book contains pages relating to the purchase of materials for the building. Among other things, nails and other hardware were purchased form James Warnock; brick from John Tilt; shingles from Kauffman's in Berlin; a chandelier ($3) from R. Struthers; lumber from J. & G. Trussler; seats from Guggisberg ($20); and doors and windows from Simpson's ($27.74). William J. McGarvey was paid $220 for the Hall property.
The Doon Christadelphian Meeting House was in use from 1889 until 1916 when it was closed. The building deteriorated so badly after the death of its last owner in 1971, that it was necessary to demolish it in 1981.
