The party came up the St. Lawrence river in rowboats as far as Prescott, where they took a steamer to Toronto, which was then a small town. They then hired a schooner to take them to Hamilton, and remained in the schooner over Sunday the party afterwards hired teams to bring them up the country to what is now known as German Mills.
Mr. Charles Cosens, father of Mrs. Tilt, purchased the farm north of Preston, now owned by Mr. C Green, where the family resided for a number of years.
In October of 1833 Mrs. Tilt left her home here to walk to where her married sister lived near Clinton. The first day she walked twenty miles, the next day twelve miles to Stratford, then called "Little Thames."
In 1834 she was married to the. late William Tilt, and in 1839 moved to Blair, then called "Carlisle," where she has resided ever since.
