Notes |
- Winterbourne
Early on the morning of April twelfth there passed away after a lingering and painful illness, the oldest resident of this section in the person of Mr. William Hardy, at the advanced age of 87 years and 10 months. The deceased was born in Nottingham, England, in 1827, and came to this country with his parents at the age of eight. The family at first lived in Hamilton then at Gourock, near Guelph, and finally took up the farm on which the deceased died. When a young man he carried the mails on horse-back thru the woods from Guelph to Hamilton, which at that time was not an easy task and at times even dangerous. On his father acquiring the property here he came home and soon after was married to Elizabeth Wright, who survive him, along with three sons, Joseph, of Lanigan, Sask., John and Frederick, of Winterbourne, and three daughters, Mrs. Hoskin, of Palmerston, Mrs. Lehman, Victoria, B. C., and Mrs. Mitchell, Winterbourne, Mrs. Daly having predeceased him. He had a sturdy independent temperament with which he faced and overcame the difficulties incident to early pioneer days. He was among the first to invest in thorough-bred cattle, and it proved to be remunerative as well as helpful to his neighbors. Possessed of a fine treble voice he, with Messrs. M. Durrat, J. Hamilton and Wm. Elsly formed a quartette that was ?ted in the days of tea-meeting and revival services. He was a consistent member and faithful supporter of the Methodist church. The funeral took place from his late residence to the Winterbourne cemetery on Wednesday of last week. Rev. W. Hamilton officiating at the services. The pall-bearers were John Hardy, Fred Hardy, Mr. Hoskin, Jas. Mitchell, Wilbur Hardy and John Daly.
