  SNYDER, Reverend Austin Francis On Saturday, November 9, 2013, The Reverend Austin Francis Snyder finished his earthly journey after recently celebrating his 85th birthday. Beloved husband and best friend of Yvonne (Vonnie) Snyder (Edmonds). Precious father of Pete Snyder, Lori MacGregor (Rod), Becky Verwaayen (Ed), Mary Stever (Jim), Jon Smyth (Amanda) and Jenn Smyth. Loved father-in-law of Marcia Snyder. Cherished Grandpa and Pop to Melissa, James, Mark, Kathryn, Jacqueline, Michael, Lauren, Madeline, Miranda, Carling, Aidan, Liam and Alyson. Much loved brother of Don Snyder (Twyllia Long), Jim Snyder (Doreen) and Joan Milne (late Robert). Loved son-in-law of Marion Edmonds. Predeceased by his father John, mother Anne (Henry), dear grandson Greg and cherished "twin" son Mike. He was so special to many as a brother-in-law, uncle, cousin and friend. Born and raised a farm boy from Winterbourne, Ontario, Austin's strong beliefs led him into the ministry of the United Church of Canada. As a student, he distinguished himself well, achieving many honours including membership in the Learned Society of Theta Phi and being a recipient of a prestigious academic scholarship to study in Indianapolis. He loved learning, especially his studies at the Jungian Institute in Switzerland. Austin began his ministry on a seven point charge at Massey-Webwood. He was a Chaplain at Cedar Springs and a much loved minister for many years at Fairview United in Brantford and Central United in Woodstock. A clinically trained Marriage and Family Therapist, he owned and operated Snyder Counselling Services in Woodstock for 10 years. His mediation skills as Interim Minister were sought after by many churches where he quickly endeared himself to his parishioners. A catalyst for change, Austin played a key role in the formation of Operation Sharing and the Canadian Mental Health Association in Woodstock. He was a trustee for the Oxford County School Board and a leader in many community organizations including the YMCA and Woodstock Developmental Services. He enjoyed working as a volunteer at the Mennonite Central Committee Thrift Store in Elmira. Austin had a quick wit, was a loyal friend and was fiercely proud of his family. He loved fishing, nature and riding his four-wheeler. At his farm in Hastings, he raised Shetland sheep and was "outstanding in his field" of onions. His ministry wasn't about "the church" but instead reflected his deep spirituality and love of community. As a Shepherd, he challenged his flock to be the best they could be in faith and in service. In short, a life well lived. Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Austin's Life will be held at Emmanuel United Church in Waterloo on November 30, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. with Rev. Glen Wright and Rev. Dr. Bruce Sweet officiating.
