Notes |
- Buried in one grave.
A rare occurrence took place at Winterbourne on Tuesday afternoon, when Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Mitchell, of West Montrose, were buried side by side in one grave. Mr. Mitchell took pneumonia a week ago last Thursday from which he suffered much until relieved by death on Saturday morning. Mrs. Mitchell had been in poor health for a long time with chronic troubles. Later she had an attack of pleurisy, and gradually sank until the end came on Monday. The aged couple had removed from the farm southwest of Montrose into the village not many months ago, and now they have been removed to the city above, it is hoped, there to enjoy eternal rest and happiness. They leave behind to mourn their departure three married sons, Andrew of Hamilton; William, on the old farm homestead; and John of California. All three were present at the funeral. A large number of friends manifested their regard for the departed by attending the funeral. Mr. Mitchell for a number of years was a member of the public school board and took a great interest in the welfare of the school.

OUR NEIGHBORS
WEST MONTROSE
In Death Not Divided.-On Saturday forenoon, Sept. 9th, an old pioneer of this township, Mr. Andrew Mitchell, after a brief attack of pneumonia, took his departure to join the great majority in that silent land from which no traveller e'er returns. He had attained the age of 75 years, and in the adjoining room his aged partner now lies at the point of death, and cannot possibly survive many hours. Such an instance of coincident mortality is unique in the history of this neighborhood, and indeed it is a touching sight to behold the venerable dead after so many years of honest, faithful labor lying calmly and peacefully in the pale repose of death, while the gentle partner of his life is not expected to survive him. She has likewise attained an advanced age, having passed the three score and ten limit of the psalmist by seven years; and now after a long and happy united life, they remain united in the glorious serenity of death, so that even "in death they were not divided." We are reminded by these pathetic events of Tennyson's beautiful lines:
"There's something flows to us in life,
But more is taken quite away.
Pray, gently pray, my darling wife,
That we may die the self-same day."
Very near to the gate of death now lies the aged Christian lady, but the victory is given, for the light of an immortal hope gleams brightly in those eyes, from whence the receding visions of all earthly things are fast passing away. Here death is not sepulchred in darkness and gloom, but is the portal or gateway to unending Vistas of indescribable glory, The body may be weak, frail and helpless, but the immortal spirit is radiant with a transfiguring hope that reaches out from time into eternity, sustained by those mighty promises of holy writ which have proved the bread of life to millions. Mr Andrew Mitchell, of the civil service in Hamilton, and his wife were present at the last illness of the parents, and another son, now a resident of California, has telegraphed that he is on his way home and will probably arrive tomorrow from that far off land. Dr. Nairn, of Winterbourne, has been in attendance, and all was done possible to relieve the aged sufferers, whose afflictions have elicited much sympathy from friends in Winterbourne, whose helpful kindness was much appreciated. Mrs. Andrew Mitchell breathed her last on Monday at 10 o'clock, in certain hope of a blessed eternity. The funeral of the late Andrew Mitchell and his aged partner took place Tuesday at 2.30 p. m., proceeding from his residence at West Montrose to the Winterbourne cemetery. The services were conducted by the Rev. A. M. Hamilton, M. A. Mr. Mitchell, of California, son of deceased, hurried home by a rapid express to be present at the interment of his parents. His son William is now residing on the old homestead adjacent to this village. The thanks of the aflicted family have been extended to the many sympathetic friends whose helpful presence has been with them in the dark hours of suffering and bereavement.
