Notes |
- Esteemed Citizen Dies in 79th Year
Walter Veitch Lived in Winterbourne 56 Years.
Death claimed one of Winterbourne's outstanding citizens on Friday evening last, in the person of Mr. Walter Veitch at the age of 78. He had been in ill health for some two years following a slight stroke, a more pronounced one being the cause of death. Mr. Veitch was born December 6, 1856 near Roseville, North Dumfries, the son of the late Mr. James Veitch and Mary Ann Hastee Veitch, both natives of Scotland and was the seventh of a family of thirteen children, the only surviving one being Mr. Robert Veitch of Roseville. Mr. Walter Veitch moved to Winterbourne in 1879 and settled on Riverside farm. He married Miss Mary Duncan of Winterbourne in 1882. Of this union eight children were born. Mr. Veitch was always keenly interested in church and community work and in politics was a staunch Liberal. The funeral was held on Tuesday from the old Homestead, "Riverside". A large throng of friends and relatives assembled to pay their last respects. The service was conducted by Rev. Mr. Stewart of Elmira and Rev. A. M. Hamilton of Guelph, a former minister of Chalmers Presbyterian Church, in which Mr. Veitch served in capacity of Kirk elder for so many years. The caskethearers were: Douglas and Jack Burnett, Leo Seidewand, Bill Duncan. Melvin and Ralph Veitch. Surviving are Mrs. Veitch, Ann (Mrs. James Burnett) of Winterbourne. Flora (Mrs. Charles MacBride) New York, Gertrude (Mrs. (Dr.) Cryden) New York, William on the homestead Winterbourne, and Dr. Hugh Veitch of Toronto. There are 21 grandchildren and 4 great grandildren. Two daughters predeceased Mr. Veitch a few years ago, Jean and Janet (Mrs. John Pirie); also a child in infancy. The sympathy of the community is extended to Mrs. Veitch and family.
