    • On the 27th of January there passed peacefully away one of the oldest residents of our burg in the person of Mr. Martin Schweitzer, at the advanced age of 72 years 5 months and 14 days.

      Three years ago he began his sufferings from cancer and about a year and a half ago, dropsy set in, from which he suffered until his death. He was born in Effingen, Grand Duchy of Baden, Germany. After his confirmation he learned the cooper trade and in 1853 he emigrated to Buffalo, U.S.

      In 1859, he married Miss Philippian Fleher and in the following year he removed to Conestogo where for 34 years he was proprietor of "Schweitzer's Hotel" from which he retired and spent the remainder of his life in his brick residence. The deceased was an active member of the Lutheran Church for 44 years.

      Mr. Schweitzer leaves behind him a widow, three daughters and five sons, one son-in-law, three daughters-in-law, two brothers and four sisters to mourn his loss. We extend to the bereaved widow and family our deepest sympathy in their hour of sadness.
