Notes |
- HENRY SCHMIDT
One of the oldest residents of the community, Henry Schmidt, passed away on Monday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. A. L.: Strome, 127 [129] Frederick St. Mr. Schmidt was 97 years of age and had been living in Kitchener for the past 15 years.
He was son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Schmidt, pioneer Waterloo County settlers. He was born in Germany, but came to Canada as a small child and lived most of his life in this county.
As a young man Mr. Schmidt learned the trade of his forefathers, tanning leather and shoemaking. He worked for some time in the United States, and then returned to Waterloo County, taking a job with tanner at St. Jacobs where he resided until coming to Kitchener.
On his 95th birthday, Mr. Schmidt ascribed his longevity to exercise and massage. Throughout he had been physically active. He found, also, that tobacco was not an injurious habit and retained a love for his pipe all his life.
Although he was the last survivor of his own family, Mr. Schmidt is mourned by four sons, three daughters, 17 grandchildren and 14 greatgrandchildren.
His philosophy of life was aptly expressed to an interviewer who talked with him on his 95th birthday.
"The spirit," he said, "doesn't get old. After we pass on, even, the spirit is still young. The body is the only thing that gets old." Mr. Schmidt was a member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church for many years.
His oldest son. Theodore, of St. Jacobs, is 74. Other survivors are Henry and Albert of Kitchener. George of Heidelberg: and three daughters, Mrs. Edward (Louise) Schaefer of Freeport, Mrs. A. L (Ada) Strome of Kitchener, Mrs. John (Malinda) Steen of Payton, Saskatchewan. His wife, formerly Julia Derbecker, died nine years ago.
The funeral will be held from the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home on Thursday afternoon at two o'clock. Interment will be made in the St. Jacobs Lutheran Cemetery. Dr. John Schmieder, pastor of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, will officiate. The body is resting at the funeral home.
