Notes |
- With Post Office 72 Years William Winkler, 89, Retires
Kitchener, Aug. 7 (Special)-William H. Winkler, at the age of 89. has retired after setting what may be a Canadian postal department record.
He has served for 72 consecutive years in the post office at St. Jacobs, near here.
When he retired this week Mr. Winkler relinquished the position of postmaster. which he had held for the past 36 years. The previous 36 years he had been assistant post-master.
The post office was established 95 years ago, and during that time has been in charge of only four men. The first appointee was Joseph Eby, who was succeeded by Peter Gleiser and then P. L. Wideman, an uncle of Mr. Winkler.
In the 72 years he has served in the post office Mr. Winkler was off work due to illness only on one occasion, and that time for a month. He has never taken holidays in that time with the exception of a few days for an occasional trip.
In addition to his duties as postmaster, handled in conjunction with his general merchant store, he operated the telegraph office for 60 years until the office was moved to the station eight years ago and served for 25 years as Division Court clerk.
He has disposed of his business to Donald Derbecker, recently returned from overseas and now discharged.
Mr. Winkler, a son of Rev. and Mrs. Philip Winkler, was born in St. Jacobs and resided there all his life. His father was the first Evangelical minister to serve in St. Jacobs.
