  J. W. HUEHNERGARD There is probably no citizen in any neighborhood more popular than is the subject of this sketch in this community. Being liberal hearted and always ready and willing to do a good turn for a neighbor or friend has won him this position among his fellow men. Mr. Huehnergard was born near Heidelberg in 1861 His birtbplace was on the farm where he passed the days of his youth. He has been in business here about eleven years with the exception of a short time he was keeping hotel in Newton, and prior to keeping hotel in Heidelberg he kept jewelry store here. The former is his present occupation and in which he is having good success. He was married in 1882 to Miss Caroline, daughter of Mr. H. K. Hahn, the well known cattle-buyer of this place. They have a family of eight children Mr. Huehnergard was also engaged in the mercantile business in Ebsville, being there about two years. There is one characteristic prominent in Mr Huehnergard that is lacking in many of those who furnish accommodation and entertainment for the travelling public. In his barroom is an aquarium containing aquatic plants and fish of the Gorman carp species lazily swimming about. He also has a number of gold fish, and several native bobolinks which he secured when they were quite young. These birds have been successfully domesticated, and in the midst of winter those enjoying the warmth of the place will be reminded of green meadows and bright June mornings by their sweet warblings. There are also several fine canaries. To lend additional attraction to the aquarium on special occasions Mr. Huehnergard has a miniature fountain in the centre, the water being derived from a small tank placed on a shelf several feet above. He has also several curious Indian relics lying around. He is also quite a successful pigeon fancier, having now a number of fine specimens of the pouter species. With these he has carried off prizes at Hamilton, London, Ingersoll, Galt and Guelph. Last season at the latter place he was awarded a diploma for the best pair of pigeons on exhibition. For the past five years Mr. Huehnergard has been the leader of the Heidelberg cornet band, which, through his efforts, has become one of the leading amateur musical organizations of Western Ontario.
