Notes |
- On the east side of the road near Hewitt's was another American whose parents had lived in Vermont. Zephaniah Sexton with his wife and family, lived on that farm which was long owned by the late Samuel S. Bowman and is now owned by his son, Leander Bowman. Zephaniah Sexton was married three times. His third wife was Elvira Clemons, from the township of Dumfries, who came to Winterbourne to teach school. In the first family were four sons: William. Manly, Jonathan and George. By the third marriage, two daughters, Polly and Dolly. This family moved to Bright, Michigan.
William Sexton came to Woolwich a little later than his uncle Zephaniah. His parents had lived at a place called Plum Hollow, back of Brockville. By trade he was a shoemaker. He was lame and walked with a crutch and cane. At an early date he taught school in Woolwich.
Williams Sexton married Priscilla, the eldest daughter of Captain Smith. There was a family of three: Amanda, Mrs. Robert Lawrason; Laura A., Mrs. George Stork; and Jonathan. Of these Mrs. Stork is at present living in Winterbourne with her daughter, Priscilla, who is Mrs. James Hamilton, and their son, Sexton Hamilton, is named after his great-grandparent.
Williams Sexton moved, first to Harrisburg, Ontario, where he lived for many years, and then to Ada, near Grand Rapids, Michigan. He died there on August 17th, 1872, in his sixty sixth year. Mrs. Sexton, who was Priscilla Smith, died in Michigan, September 23rd, 1890, in her eighty-third year.
