Notes |
- MR. ANDREW MCILWRAITH. In St. Andrew's Church Mr. McIlwraith was an active worker. He belonged to the Board of Managers, and was also chosen to the responsible position of Secretary-Treasurer, which shows the confidence the congregation reposed in him. He was trusted. Dr. Campbell, in his " Statistical Register of St. Andrew's Church," says of him: " A native of Newton in Ayr, and brought up under the ministry of the distinguished preachers, Caird, Stewart, Boyd, Burns and Macgregor." This left its mark on him, for he was thoughtful, retiring and quiet in his demeanor, highly intelligent, with a well cultivated mind ; a choice spirit. In " Memoirs of the Past," I speak of him in this way: " Another was of a dreamy, meditative temperament, who often made tours in the country to hunt up the wealth of lovely wildflowers found there, bring ing back many a prize. A born naturalist, a man of refinement and culture, who was an educative force on everyone he touched ; extremely modest, but a thoroughly brotherly and companionable man." He was kind and sympathetic, unobtrusive and reserved. He would not thrust himself upon your attention, but if you desired to enter into fellowship with him there was a large and liberal feast of good things awaiting you, one that enriched you with influences that stirred thought and awoke feeling, and made their impact upon the will strongly felt. He was one of those noble, worthy, diffident men, of whom the noisy world hears least, but who are generally best worth hearing of. He belonged to " Galt Literary and Scientific Society," and prepared for it a paper on " The Flora of Galt," which was published in the town papers. He was a most valuable member, taking a deep interest in every matter that came under discussion. In the Central Church he was felt to be a tower of strength. His upright, honorable life, his spotless and consistent character, his embodiment of truth made him one of the most respected members. Such men are alike the glory of the church and the preserving salt of the community. They, can not be valued too highly. Mr. Mcllwraith read widely, we might say, omnivorously. His intellectual cravings had to be met, and there fore he was a lover of solid books. Another marked feature of his character was his desire to help others. That was ever seeking expression and did not fail of finding it. His was a beneficent and gracious presence. One whose influence abides with us like the sweet and reviving fragrance of roses. We wish not to lose it, but to live in its atmosphere, it is so helpful. How true is it that " the memory of the just is blessed."

Public Library has recently been given a copy of the diary of Andrew McIlwriath, 1857-62. This is a typescript of the diary, done by Roy Allen. Andrew McIlwraith was born in Scotland and is listed in the 1864 directory of Galt as a clerk. The contents include accounts of drawing plans of bridges, pipes and switches in Sarnia, lists of birds seen, visits to Hamilton and to Scotland to visit his mother. His sweetheart seems to have been Mary Goldie. Of particular interest to Norma Huber and her colleagues is that he regularly visited the cemetery\emdash to catch butterflies! This diary is available to anyone interested in Galt during this period.

Death or Mr. A. McIlwraith
Mr. Andrew McIlwraith for the past ten years accountant of the Gore Insurance Company, expired very suddenly on Friday night, whilst on his way home from a meeting of the School Board, of which he was a member. The deceased had been suffering for sometime, from Bright's disease, but was able to continue the duties of his office to the last. For a few days previous to his death he appeared to be failing. On the evening of his death, he was met on Main street by his son-in-law, Mr. Chas. Turnbull, who noticing that Mr. Mcilwraith was not well, assisted him on his way home, but on reaching the corner at Lutz's drug store, he suddenly fell down, apparently unconscious. A young man who was passing was sent for a physician, but it was sometime before one could be found and in the mean-time deceased was carried to Dr. Hawk's office, where he shortly afterwards expired. Mr. McIlwraith was born in Newton-on-Ayr, Scotland, Feb, 18th 1831 and came to Canada about 38 years ago and was for sometime in the engineers department of the Great Western Railway at Hamilton, afterwards coming to Galt, where he was book-keeper for the late Mr. Jns. Crombie and for Goldie McCulloch. He removed to Listowel, about 20 years ago and engaged in the foundry business, in which he continued for some 10 years, then removing to Galt, where he has ever since resided. He was married to Miss Groldie, sister of the Messrs. Goldie, who together with two sons and three daughters, survives him. One daughter, Miss Jean, is in Winnipeg and of course did not get home in time for the funeral. His eldest son has a good position in New York. Deceased was a gentleman of an exceedingly amiable disposition and possessed a large fund of Scottish folk lore. He was greatly interested in botany and devoted much of his leisure time to the collection of wild flowers. He was a member of Galt Public School Board and president of the Mechanics Institute The funeral was attended by a large number of citizens. The directors of the Gore insurance Company and the School Trustees attended in a body, as also did many of the senior pupils of the Public schools, which were closed on Monday afternoon, out of respect to the deceased.
