- Dies in Delhi Fire
Mrs. Norman Beisel on Visit
Trapped in Basement of Home
DELHI - The charred body of Mrs. Norman Beisel, 65, of 32 Water St., Elmira, was recovered late last night from embers of a $30,000 frame farm house which burned to the ground two miles south of here.
The 11 persons in the house were candling eggs in the basement when flames of unknown origin broke out in the upper storey and were soon roaring through the main floor.
All but Mrs. Beisel escaped in time. Handbags were forgotten in the scramble to get out.
In the building with Mrs. Beisel were Mrs. David Tisdale, two sisters, a friend, Mrs. Wilfred Pollard of Lynedoch, and six children.
Mr. Tisdale was not on his farm at the time and Mrs. Pollard attempted to use the telephone, fast being engulfed in flames, but she was driven back with burns.
She ran to the near-by farm home of Berton Axford and placed an alarm to the Delhi fire department, but too late to save anything in the house
CHOKED BY SMOKE
Mr. Axford ran to the Tisdale home and plunged into the smoke-filled basement through an outside door hoping to save the trapped Mrs. Beisel, but he was forced back outside by the choking smoke.
Not familiar with the hose, Mrs. Beisel did not know of the outside door.
Firemen from Delhi fought the blaze until 8 p.m.
Mrs. Beisel had spent two weeks holidays at Turkey Point with a friend, Mrs. Arthur Arnum of St. Thomas, her daughter-in-law's grandmother. She had planned to return home Sunday but was persuaded to remain for a few more days.
Her son Kenneth, of Fort Erie was bringing her home when they stopped for a visit at the Tisdale home.
FUNERAL SUNDAY
Daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. George Holzworth, Mrs. Beisel was born Jan. 6, 1888. She was a member of St. James's Lutheran Church and of the Ladies Aid Society.
