Notes |
- Conrad was a very active man and said frequently that he wished to wear out not rust out. He suffered a paralytic stroke, but he kept on moving about when most other men would have thought it impossible. In his younger days he took active part in church, school and the general affairs of life. Burial was in the Baptist cemetery in Upper Woolwich (Sandhills side road) the church is no longer standing. Rev. John Meyers of New Hamburg conducted assisted by Rev. W. J. Zimmerman of Elmira. The Sandhills side road cemetery is now abandoned, but has been taken over by the township of Woolwich. It was cleared and all the stones were set in long cement trenches because the stones had all fallen or were knocked down so the actual places of the graves is not known. This was done by members of the family before the township took over.

_____________
Woolwich Pioneer Buried.
The late Conrad Umbach, whose death was announced in these columns on Wednesday, was one of the early settlers of Upper Woolwich. He was the oldest son of John Umbach and was born in Moeuchzell, Sinshelm, Grand duchy of Baden, Germany, on the 26th of April, 1824. In 1843 he came to Canada with his parents, who lived for two years in Waterloo township, then moved to Upper Woolwich, where deceased lived the remainder of his life all but the last two years and a little over. In 1848 he got married to Mary Reichert, who died in 1893. They lived on the old homestead (now owned by Mr. A. D. Schmidt) until 1888 when his so Solomon took charge of the farm and he moved out to the Arthur road to the property formerly owned by his son Philip. A little over two years ago he came to Elmira and made his home with his daughter, Mrs. C. Hahu.
The living children are: Philip, Edmonton; Elizabeth (Mrs. C. Hahu,) Elmira; John, Edmonton; Solomon Carstairs; Isaac, Peel; Louisa (Mrs. John H. Schaefer), Elmira; Israel, Spruce Grove, Alberta. Three daughters died before the parents. There are also living 50 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Over a year ago ho suffered a paralytic stroke, but he kept moving about when most other men would have thought it impossible. In his younger days he took an active interest in school and church and the general affairs of life.
