    • Death of a Well-Known Resident of Puslinch

We regret to be called upon today to announce the death of Mr. Walter Cowan, an old and respected resident of Puslinch, and brother of Messrs. Wm. and James Cowan, of West Dumfries. The deceased succumbed on Sunday to an internal ailment from which he had been suffering for a length of time. He was born at Yarrow Feus, Scotland, in October, 1817, and was consequently in the 69th year of his age. When only 12 years of age his father emigrated to Canada and settled on the farm near Galt, now occupied by Mr. Wm. Cowan. About the year 1850, the subject of this notice removed to Puslinch, where he has since continuously resided, and where he earned the esteem and respect of all who knew him. For many years he was an elder in U.P. church, and always took a prominent part in religious work. Only one son survives him, a son and daughter having died in infancy.

      _______________

      COWAN, WALTER

The Session is called upon to mourn the loss of one of its most prominent members at his residence in Puslinch on Sabbath day, June 20th 1886, in the 70th year of his age. Mr. Cowan suffered for a long time acutely from cancer. He bore his affliction with great patience, fortitude and Christian resignation and yielded up his spirit in the faith and hope of a glorious immortality. He was connected with the congregation of Duff's Church for about forty years, for seventeen of which he filled the office of ruling elder. Mr. Cowan was of a quiet, unassuming disposition, genial, affable and kind; always ready to take his share of congregational duties and to cooperate with his brethren in every good work. He was born at Yarrow Fens, Scotland on the 31st October 1817. He came to Canada with his father and family in the year 1829 and settled on a farm near Galt, on which his youngest brother still lives. Before leaving the Old Country, he was shepherd for two years to James Hogg, the Ettrick Shepherd and always cherished fond recollections of the renowned poet. He was a resident in Puslinch for the last thirty-five years and was a staunch Reformer but never took any active part in politics. He was held in much respect by all who knew him for his many good qualities. He was an uncle to Dr. Cowan of Guelph. The funeral took place on Tuesday from his residence, lot 29, gore of Puslinch, at 2 to the burying ground near Duff's Church.

Friends and acquaintances are invited to attend.
