    • GEORGE D SMITH

Tailoring is as essential to the general business interests of a community […calling,], and Heidelberg [ ] represented in this particular. Mr. Smith opened his shop here in February, 1895, but he was not a stranger to the citizens for it was here that he learned his trade with Mr. Jacob Forler in 1887. Like many others who have served the required apprenticeship, he went forth among strangers to gain further experience. He first worked as a 'jour" in Waterloo and finally in Tavistock, and subsequently spent some time in New York State, working at his trade in several of the leading cities, where he acquired an experience which has proved beneficial to him as a fashionable tailor. Previous to coming here Mr. Smith had a shop at Carthage, but not being satisfied with the locality he concluded to remove to Heidelberg. Since coming here he has built up a fine patronage where others have failed. Many of the best families of the neighborhood are his customers. Mr. Smith is a native of St Jacobs, where he was born in 1872, his father, Mr. Henry Smith, being a well known citizen of that village, who was an employee in the old Cannery there for over twenty-two years. The subject of this sketch was married in May, 1897, to Miss Clara, daughter of Mr. Henry Doering, of Erbsville. Mr. Smith ferquently employes as high as four or five hands. He takes a deep interest in the welfare of the village and undoubtedly contributes as much toward its support as does any other citizen in similar circumstances. He is a member of the band - a musical organization that has earned quite an enviable reputation for Heidelberg, and in which he takes a deep interest.
