Notes |
- Snowstorm
One of Ayr's best known citizens, whose familiar, cheerful greeting was known to hundreds, passed away on Thursday with the tragic death of John, W. Henderson, aged 67 years
Car Bogged During Storm
Mr. Henderson was driving Mrs. A. Wyllie Watson and her niece, Mrs. Robert Lovett, to Kitchener that afternoon when the car became bogged down about three miles south of Kitchener during a blinding snowfall. Mr. Henderson accepted a ride in a newspaper delivery car to the nearby farm of Andrew Filsinger, and walked up the lane to the barn.
Unaware of Destination
The car's occupants waited nearly two hours for Mr. Henderson's return, unaware of where he had gone to seek assistance. Eventually, they were taken to Roseville by a passing motorist and contacted Mr. Lovett.
Found in Root Cellar
The process of tracing the delivery man required some time, and when the proper farm was located a search of the premises revealed Mr. Henderson's body in the root cellar. Mr. Henderson had apparently gone through the root cellar door, which opened from the exterior, and fallen down the two steps. Another nearby door would have led him into the barn proper.
Died of Seizure
An autopsy performed the following day revealed that Mr. Henderson had died of natural causes, probably a seizure resulting from the exertion of walking through the snow-filled lane.
A Native of Ayr
A native of Ayr, he was born in the residence now occupied by Mrs. Josiah Wainwright, a son of the late Thomas Henderson and Elizabeth Little. The family name is etched in the history of this village, his parental grandparents having been residents here in the early days.
Served During World War I
Early in life Mr. Henderson went West, and when World War I broke out he enlisted in the army. He served four years overseas with the 46th Battalion, and during this conflict lost a brother, William Stewart, killed in action. Mr. Henderson had a keen recollection of his army service, of which he was justifiably proud, and spoke authoritatively of the actions in which he was engaged.
Reputation for Reliability
For many years he was employed with the John Watson Mfg. Co. in the capacity of caretaker, and also tended several other buildings and residences in the village. He gained for himself the reputation of a conscientious and reliable employee which he retained throughout his lifetime. Last summer he suffered an illness which forced him to give up most of his positions. Mr. Henderson was a valued member of Knox United Church.
The Survivors
Surviving, besides his wife, the former Eva Myrtle Armstrong, are two sons, Lloyd at home and Stewart of Toronto; two sisters, Mrs. Margaret Wilfong of Montreal and Mrs. J. R. Wood, Preston.
Largely Attended Funeral
The largely attended funeral held from Knox United Church on Monday afternoon, the service being conducted by Rev. R. D. Thompson. Interment was made in Ayr Cemetery. Pallbearers were: John E. Ennis, Lorne R. Eamer, Arthur Underwood, Robert E. Lovett, George Edgar and R. Bruce Carswell.
