  • Notes
    • John Wesley Hunt - Year's Grand Old Man Passes Away in His 91st Year - John Wesley Hunt, Ayr's grand old man, is dead. He passed away early Saturday morning following an illness of some two weeks. Mr. Hunt, who was in his 91st year, was a familiar and welcome sight on the streets of the village for more years than most of us can remember.

Born in Flamboro Township, near Copetown, Mr. Hunt came to Ayr over sixty years ago, before the railroad - the Credit Valley - went through. He first operated the old temperance house and boarding stable, located where the Baxter residence now stands. In the days of horse-drawn vehicles this was a flourishing business, such an establishment being located every few miles. He then became engaged with the late David Goldie to look after the unloading of grain and loading and shipping of flour, when these products were conveyed to and from the mill by teams and wagons, and in the flourishing days of the Goldie flour mills, he saw as many as fifty carloads of wheat standing on the track at one time. He held this position for twelve years, until the railroad siding was extended from the station to the mill in 1893.

In 1895 he went into the coal and wood business and carried on a prosperous and successful business for 24 years, when he retired in 1919. He was well known throughout Western Ontario as a coal merchant and was one of the oldest members of the Ontario Coal Dealers Association. Mr. Hunt always had the welfare of the village at heart, and in 1907 served as a member of the village council, when he was in charge of the work of macadamizing Northumberland Street.

Many years ago he was an active member and officer of the Royal Templars Lodge. In religion, he was a Methodist, and later was an adherent of Knox United Church. Mr. Hunt was a man of splendid habits, and was possessed of a generous hearted and honest disposition a work? of ?ous energy in his younger years, he took a deep and pardonable pride in the results of his efforts, and it was a source of great satisfaction to him to know that all he had accomplished was due to his own initiative.

Mr. Hunt was a conversationalist of no mean ability and his tales of early days in Ayr were well worth hearing. He was well and widely known in the community and held in high esteem by those with whom he had business dealings over a long period of time. Previous to coming to Ayr, he married Mary Wilson from near Paris, who died six years later. Two children were born to their union, Elizabeth (Mrs. Landreth) and Melvin, who are now living in Ayr. About five years after the death of his first wife, he married Elizabeth Wilson, who died in December, 1922.

      The Funeral

Memorial services took place from his late residence, Northumberland Street, on Monday at 3 p.m., to the Ayr Cemetery. Rev. J. W. Currie officiated. During the service two hymns, "Abide With Me," and "Rock of Ages," were sung by the following sextet: Mrs. Walter Bell, Mrs. James A. Dalzell, Mrs. Norman Morton, Mrs. Herald Plumstead, Andrew Easton, and Richard Baxter. There were many beautiful floral tributes. Pallbearers were: Henry C. Elliott, g. S. Dalrymple, William Plumstead, Robert Campbell, James Bell, Walter Bell.
