Notes |
- Passing of David McCall
Word has been received from Victoria, B. C., of the death of a former highly esteemed resident of this village n the person of David McCall, who died in his 90th year on February 11th, after an illness of four days. Mr. McCall was born in Glasgow, Scotland, on April 10, 1840, and came to Ayr when a young man. After spending a few months in Ayr, he joined some scotch friends in Chicago, was employed there in wholesale furniture and, on the night of the great Chicago fire in 1871, was ordered by the military authorities to go to Detroit. Returning to Chicago, he later became an employee of the Post Office Department. On November 6, 1879, he married Elizabeth Baker and joined the general merchant business of the late William Baker and, after the death of William Baker, the firm was known as Baker & McCall. He retired from business when he sold the property to the present owner, W. A. Ramsay. He lived in Ayr until the death of his wife in July 26, 1918, when he went to Keewatin, Ont., to live with Mr. and Mrs. John Goldie. They all returned to Ayr in 1921, and later, in 1925, went to make their home in Victoria, B. C. He was a member of the United Church, also a member of the Ayr curling and bowling clubs. He is survived by one brother, John McCall, a retired school principal, living near Jedburgh, Scotland. The body has been cremated and interment will take place in the Ayr Cemetery.
