Notes |
- Mara & Co., General and Fancy Dry Goods, Main Street - Galt is possessed of several first-class dry goods establishments, prominent among which must be mentioned the firm of Messrs. Mara & Co., whose business has been established over two and a half years, having been previously on Ainsley Street for two years; but finding themselves crowded for room, they removed to their present large and commodious premises, which are more eligibly located, being in the business heart and on the leading thoroughfare of the city. The premises are 28x110 feet in dimensions, where is carried a large, complete and well selected stock of general and fancy dry goods, boots and shoes, hats and caps, and read-made clothing of the most fashionable designs and manufacture. They purchase direct from the leading manufacturers, and, buying largely, make liberal terms, whereby they are enabled to give their customers the benefit in low figures. The business of the house is rapidly extending, and now covers both town and the surrounding sections of country. Employment is given to eight competent and courteous assistants, who are ever willing and pleased to show goods. Mr. Mara is a native of Canada, and is a wide-awake, persevering and enterprising business man, and is materially tending to augment the commercial importance of Galt. He was a member of the Town Council of Milton, where he previously resided, and is held in high esteem in the community where he now resides. They use three electric lights, and are the only firm in Galt having the Cash Railway System, having two stations. They also deal extensively in bankrupt stocks of dry goods, and buy all for spot cash, thereby giving their customers the benefit. Their annual sales amount to over $100,000 dollars. They do the largest business in Galt, selling for spot cash.

Drug Clerk's Mistake: T. A. Mara, of T. A. Mara & Co., general merchants, London, died on Tuesday from the effects of an overdose of morphine taken for a cold in mistake for quinine. It is alleged that a drug clerk in filling the prescription made the fatal mistake. A daughter of Mr. Mara's also took a dose of the medicine, and was for a time in great danger. T. A. Mara was for years a prominent merchant in Galt, and had several branch stores through Western Ontario.
