Notes |
- Charles McGeorge, Dealer in Drugs, Stationery and Fancy Goods, Northumberland Street - Among the commercial resources of Ayr, the trade carried on in drugs and stationery is a most important one, and foremost among those engaged in it is Mr. Charles McGeorge. This gentleman commenced business in 1877, having since built up a splendid trade, which is now the largest and finest of its kind in Ayr. Mr. McGeorge carries a complete line of drugs, chemicals, patent medicine and pharmaceutical preparations, making a specialty of cough remedies and family liniments, manufactured on the premises. The stock is excellent throughout, and can always be relied upon for its purity. A large and general stock of stationery and books is carried, this store being the headquarters for school books. A fine assortment of fancy goods is always on hand, and for Christmas and other presents, there is no other establishment in Ayr which can so completely meet all such demands. A very large trade is necessarily carried on by Mr. McGeorge, which is constantly increasing, and he is also agent for the Canadian Pacific Telegraph Company. Mr. McGeorge, who is a native of Ayr, is an energetic and thorough man of business. He is widely and most favorably known in the locality, being honorable and upright in all his dealings.

Charles McGeorge Passes - Was Prominent Business Man of Ayr for Fifty Years
It was with genuine sorrow that the people of Ayr received word on Monday morning of the death in Galt Hospital of Charles McGeorge. Deceased who was 76 years of age, had been ill for some three years of heart trouble, and for the past couple of months had been receiving treatment in the hospital. His condition grew steadily worse, however, until death relieved him of his suffering. For a period of fifty years Mr. McGeorge was one of the prominent figures in the business life of Ayr, and he was always in the forefront in any movement which provided for advancement of his native village. For some 47 years he was proprietor of the drug and stationery store now occupied by Messrs. Prudham & Lewis, and during that time he built up an enviable reputation for his integrity and fair dealing. His life partner, whose maiden name was Selinda Freeman of Brant County, predeceased him in1923, since which time deceased had never taken the same interest in the affairs the public. In politics, he was a Conservative, being one of the leading members of the party in this riding. In religion, he was an adherent of the United Church. He was a consistent member of both the Curling and Bowling Clubs and, at the time of his demise, was an honorary member of each organization. Since the incorporation of the village Mr. McGeorge had always been keenly interested in municipal matters and in this connection it might be noted that he was a member of the committee to lay out the original boundary line of the village. He was also a member of the first Council, and its second Reeve. He is survived by two sisters and a brother: also a niece, Mrs. Hedley Bindon of Ottawa, and a nephew Mrs. Thos. McDonald, Detroit. The funeral took place to the Ayr Cemetery yesterday afternoon, a full report of which will appear in our next issue.
