Notes |
- Oldest Native Resident Gone - Demise of Mr. Thomas Whitson After Short Illness - In this year of grace we celebrate its 100th anniversary and the Sunday last the …?... Ayr cemetery the remains of the ...?... native-born citizen in the person of Thomas Whitson who passed away the …?... Friday, in his 84th year. It is regrettable, of course, that Mr. Whitson's lease of life did not extend beyond the date of the proposed celebration …?... August, but while man proposes, …?...poses. For nearly 84 years he was an eye-witness of the growth and material advancement of the village where he spent all his life, and was …?... with all the manifold events pertaining to the community, thus constitutes an encyclopedia of first-hand knowledge concerning local affairs, and would have ranked as the oldest native born citizen in the coming Centennial. The deceased, who had been ill only a couple months, had enjoyed good health practically all his life and took a deep interest in mundane affairs almost to the last. He was an enthusiastic curler, and a few years ago was elected an honorary member of the local club. He was also a keen horseman and for a long series of years was …?... master at the horse shows and fall fairs in the district. In politics he was a Liberal and in religion a Presbyterian. As a citizen, he evinced concern in all matters pertaining to the welfare of the community. His activities in …?... naturally resulted in a wide acquaintance among men of affairs, while his ?banity and marked affability entitled him to the esteem and respect which was his. For a great many years he was in the employ of The John Watson Manufacturing Co. He married …?... Elizabeth Gladstone …?... The family …?... three daughters and one son. They are: Mrs. Jno. Melvin, Galt; Mrs. J. C. Kyle, Ayr, and Mary and Edward at home. A sister, Mrs. James Dockburn?, Hamilton, also survive. The funeral was largely attended, Rev. J. J. Brown conducting the services, and the …?... long friends acting as pallbearers: Messrs. W. E. Gammon, Wm. Nicoll, A. G. Watson, Wm. Manson, A. E. Watson and Wm. Landreth.
