Notes |
- Passing of Prominent Citizen - Andrew J. Reid Succumbs to Stroke at Ripe Age - In the death of Andrew J. Reid, which took place at his residence, Colquhoun street, on Sunday, June10th. Ayr loses a prominent citizen a man of many parts and marked activity throughout a long and useful career. Born at Reidsville of Scottish parentage, he spent the greater part of his life there as a farmer and sawmiller, coming to Ayr 35 years ago where he held a position with the W. I. Reid Co. until Wednesday of last week, and had been measuring lumber just before suffering a paralytic stroke, which, at the age of over 82 years, terminated in death in a few days. He was widely read, and, being endowed with a keen intellect, he soon adapted himself to fill a niche in the activities of the community. Besides holding many minor positions in civic life, he was for a period of 22 years the efficient clerk and treasurer of the municipality, doing a great deal of faithful and expert work at a salary far from equivalent to his duties and the ability exercised therein. In politics he was a staunch Conservative and in religion a Presbyterian. For years he was a member of the Board of Managers in Stanley Street Church, also treasurer for a long period, and a valued member of the choir. After the union with Knox Church he was likewise treasurer of Knox United Church until a couple of years ago. In literary work, "A. J.," as he was familiarly known, was no novice, contributing many creditable articles to the public press. Not satisfied with a pretty comprehensive grasp of things mundane, he also invaded the realm of the canopy known as the sty and was no mean authority on the science of astronomy, as well as a philosopher and a good mathematician. It was in sports however, that he particulary excelled. …?... all kinds, it was in curling and quoits that he got his keenest pleasure. In 1899 he formed one of an Ayr rink that won the Sleeman Trophy at Guelph, the other members being Messrs. John Goldie, John Anderson and the late John Wyllie. Ever active in some useful capacity, Mr. Reid also devoted a portion of his leisure time to the manufacture of walking canes, and at the time of death had a stock of 200 on hand, made from all the different woods in North America. As a caricaturist he was second only to such men as Bengough and Hunter. In society circles he was a Mason, the oldest in town, and was recently put on the honorary roll. Upwards of four years ago, the subject of this sketch and Mrs. Reid celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. Those surviving besides Mrs. Reid, whose maiden name was Isabel Johnston, are a daughter and son, Bessie of New York and James A. of Windsor, and a grandson, Harold McGrogan, Ayr. Another daughter, Mrs. Richard McGrogan, died a few years ago. The funeral to Ayr cemetery on Tuesday was very largely attended, the service being conducted by Rev. Mr. McRae of Glenmorris. The pallbearers were all nephews. The floral offerings were numerous and beautiful.
