Notes |
- In the passing of Mrs. A. J. Ried on Saturday last, Ayr lost its oldest citizen. Born June 4, 1849, on the 10th concession of North Dumfries, where she lived until coming to Ayr in 1886, she was the youngest daughter of John Johnstone and Isabella Hastie, who with the older members of their family came to Canada from Scotland in 1831.
Mrs. Reid was the last member of the joint families of Johnstone and Reid, there being nine in each family. She was married in 1867 and celebrated their golden wedding anniversary 27 years ago. Her husband predeceased her 21 years ago; also five members of their family. She is survived by one daughter, Miss Bessie, of Ayr; one son, Jas. A., of Windsor; a son-in-law, F. R. McGrogan, of Ayr; four grandchildren, Harold Reid McGrogan, Milton; Lieut. Jas. A. Reid, R.C.N.V.R., Montreal; Able Seaman Merrick S. Reid, R.C.N.V.R., Halifax, and Miss Betty Reid, Windson, and tow great grandchildren, George Richard and Mary Elizabeth McGrogan, Milton.
Mrs. Reid was a charter member and treasurer of the former Stanley Street Church W.M.S. and later a life member of the society. She was active in the Woman"s Association in her earlier years, and until a couple of years ago was in regular attendance at Knox United Church. Mrs. Reid was a charter member of the Ayr Hospital Aid.
by her gentle disposition and kindly ways, she had during her long life endeared herself to a large circle of friends, to which the beautiful floral tributes testified.
The funeral which took place from her late residence Tuesday afternoon, was attended by relatives and friends of the community,. Rev. R. A. Steed conducted the service. A duet, "The Sands of Time are Sinking," was sung by Mrs. G. A. Graham, and R. L. Anderson, accompanied by Mrs. N. R. Morton; who also played soft music during the service.
Among the relatives and friends from out-of-town attending the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Jas. A. Reid and Miss Bessie Reid, Windsor; Lieutenant Jas. A. Reid, R.C.N.V.R., Montreal; Mr. and Mrs. Alex Reid and Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Reid, Niagara Falls; Mr. and Mrs. Everett Thompson, Mrs. D.A. McKenzie and John Rocks, Toronto; Mrs. Bell Hester, Seaforth; Mr. and Mrs. Judson Everett and Mr. and Mrs. Clare Bartley, Woodstock; Mr. and Mrs Earle Baird, St. George; Mr. and Mrs. Harold Reid McGrogan, Milton; Mr. and Mrs. R.
