Notes |
- Dr. William Lovett Dies In His 96th Year - It was with genuine regret that the citizens of Ayr were informed on Sunday of the death in Detroit of Dr. William Lovett, one of Ayr's grand old men, who had practiced medicine for so many years in this village. Dr. Lovett was in his 96th year, and Ayr experienced its period of greatest growth during the 37 years Dr. Lovett practiced here. Dr. Lovett was born in Ancaster May 29, 1842, and was educated at Ancaster Grammar School. Later he attended the Provincial Normal School, Toronto, and in 1866 received his matriculation at McGill College, Montreal. He graduated in 1870 with the degree of M.D.C.M.. Upon the establishment of a Provincial Board of Examiners Ontario in 1870, Dr. Lovett was among the first to be examined and the first to register. He commenced his practice in Ayr in that year, and continued until 1907, when he retired on account of poor health. The Doctor was one of McGill's first medical students, his medical diploma being No. 2. He was the oldest member in the Medical Council. The Doctor was appointed associate coroner and medical attendant for the CPR at Ayr in 1880 and continued to hold that position during his residence in Ayr. He was an honorary member of the Oxford Medical Association. Dr. Lovett removed to Regina, Sask., with his family in 1907 and remained there until 1912. He returned to Ayr that year, and latterly had been residing with his daughter in Detroit. A son, the late Dr. A. S. Lovett, practiced for many years in Paris. Surviving members of the family are: Mrs. D. C. Petrie, Toronto; A. Morton Lovett, Maclean, Sask., and James H. Lovett, Toronto. A daughter, Mrs. O. T. falls, and a son, William, died some years ago. - The Funeral - The funeral was held Tuesday with service n Knox United Chruch and interment in Ayr Cemetery.
