    • Demise of Mrs. Finlayson - Had a Thrilling Experience in West During Rebellion - Another pioneer has passed through the portals which divide Time and Eternity. Shortly after midnight on the 3rd Inst., Mrs. Finlayson joined the throng that has passed to the Great Beyond. She had been ill for a period of about two months, the trouble being of a nervous nature. Mrs. Finlayson, whose maiden name was Sarah Jane Stewart, was in her 63rd year. She was born in Paris, but spent the greater portion of her life in and around Ayr, where she was well-known and highly respected. In religion she was a Presbyterian and an active member of the Ladies Aid. Her husband predeceased her about 21 years. There was no family, but three brothers and a sister survive. They are Robert and Peter Stewart, Ottawa, W. D. Stewart, Tacoma, Wash., and Mrs. McCutcheon, Ayr. Early in life Mrs. Finlayson spent a couple of years in the Northwest, where she had a unique and thrilling experience. Not only did she encounter the hardships incident to a new country, but it also fell to her lot to be there curing the rebellion. Those were strenuous and anxious times for the people of the west, but it was doubly so in Mrs. Finlayson's case. Situated in a sparsely settled section at Carrot River, it required all the men available to man the trenches, and upon the women of the settlement devolved the task of keeping up the supply of munitions and feeding the men. To Mrs. Finlayson fell the duty of "quartermaster" and the highly satisfactory manner in which she performed the work indicated her zeal in the cause. A worthy citizen and a good neighbor, she will be sincerely mourned by a wide circle of friends. The funeral took palce yesterday afternoon and was largely attended, interment being made in the Ayr cemetery. Rev. J. J. Brown, deceased's pastor, conducted the services. The pallbearers were: Messrs. Wm. Leithead; A. C. Gillies, W. A. Upton, C. McGeorge, Jas. G. Fair and G. W. Dawson.
