Notes |
- Passing of William Smuck - On Sunday this community lost another well-known and long-time resident in the person of William Smuck, proprietor of the Commercial Hotel, who passed away at noon after an illness extending over a year. The deceased, who was in his 62nd year, was born in the township of South Dumfries, and came to Ayr 36 years ago. At the death of his father, the late Jacob Smuck, in 1903, William succeeded to the proprietorship of the Commercial, of which he had previously been manager, and for years past this well-appointed hostelry was known far and wide as a first-class house. His last illness was due to neuritis, culminating in congestion of the lungs. Several brothers and sisters survive to mourn their loss. They are: Robert, South Dumfries; Walter and Charles, Wetaskiwin, Alta.; Miss Adelia and Mrs. G.W. Cross, Ayr; and Mrs. Chas. Crandell, Colborne. The funeral took place on Tuesday, the service being conducted by Rev. Mr. James, pastor of the Methodist church, interment being made in the Ayr cemetery. The Oddfellows, to which order the deceased belonged, turned out in a body and paid their customary last tribute of respect to a departed brother. The pallbearers were relatives, viz., Messrs. Alex. Markle, John Markle, G.W. Cross, Chas. Crandell, Robert Smuck and Chas. Smuck.
