- Mrs. I. M. Goldie - Ayr Loses Prominent and Respected Citizen
Amid the beautiful surroundings of her beloved home,"The Gore," Mrs. I. M. Goldie, one of Ayr's most prominent and public spirited citizens, passed quickly and peacefully away on Wednesday afternoon of last week. She had complained of feeling ill the night previous but appeared to be in good health the next morning. After the noonday meal she expressed the desire to sleep and thus gently she entered into "the sleep that knows no waking."
Her interests were centered in this village for the past 50 years or more and she was always keenly interested in all movements for the advancement of its citizens. Her special attention, however, was devoted to the young people and she was particularly happy when advancing their welfare. Many years ago she presented the pupils of the public school with a full set of playthings for the commodious school grounds, including swings, slides and other apparatus. The public fountain, which is much appreciated by the citizens at large, was also erected by Mrs. Goldie, in memory of her son, David Moray, who was drowned in the waters of the Nith while on a canoe trip to Paris in the spring of the year.
During the period of the war she worked day and night for the comfort of the troops at the front. She was instrumental in organizing the Ayr Patriotic Society and this organization sent thousands of pairs of socks, handkerchiefs and other articles to the Canadian soldiers overseas. The Ayr boys were also suitably, remembered at Christmas time and other occasions with sweets, cigarettes, cakes, etc. Every movement to beautify the town, or for the improvement of its citizens was certain to find an enthusiastic supporter in Mrs. Goldie. To contribute to such products as the community Christmas tree gave her much pleasure, and a few days before her demise she sent word to Reeve Griffin to call and see her in connection with beautifying the waterfront at Watson's dam.
During the many years of her residence here she endeared herself to everyone with whom she came in contact and she will be much missed by the whole community. Her maiden name was Isabella Moray Easton and she was born in Scotland 81 years ago. She came to Ayr when but a girl of 21. In 1870 she married David Goldie, founder of the flour mill at Greenfield, who predeceased her in 1895. She is survived by the following children John of Victoria, B. C., George of California. Dr. William of Toronto, James of Okanagan, B. C., Herbert of Vancouver, and Crosby of Toronto; Ann, wife of F. A. Clelland, Toronto; Esther, wife of D E. Kilgour, Toronto; and Theresa, wife of John Falkner, Toronto. The funeral took place on Friday afternoon from Knox United Church to Ayr Cemetery and was largely attended. Hundreds of people from the village and countryside, as well as many friends and relatives from out-of-town, were present to pay their last respects to the memory of one who was always a friend in time of trouble and whose many acts of kindness had endeared her to all. The service was most impressive, being conducted jointly by Rev. I. H. Currie, and Rev. Lavell, of Toronto. The floral tributes were numerous and beautiful, and at the conclusion of the service those present were given the opportunity of viewing for the last time the features of her they loved so well. The pallbearers were A. R. Goldie, Dr. Wm. Goldie, C. Goldie, R. Neilson, Dr. F. A. Clelland and D.E. Kilgour.
