- Walter W. Reid
Native of Ayr Passes on Sunday in His 82nd Year
Another native son of Ayr passed away on Sunday, January 9, in the person of Walter W. Reid, Bruce Street, in his 82nd year. Mr. Reid was suddenly taken ill on Saturday night and passed away Sunday morning. He was born in Ayr, a son of John S. Reid and Isabella Matheson. A carpenter by trade, Mr. Reid was also a poultry breeder of considerable note. For many years he conducted a poultry farm in the west end on the property now owned by Alexander McLeod, Jr., and he took many prizes on his birds at the surrounding fall fairs. In the days of 35 to 40 years ago, Mr. Reid also conducted a pleasure boat business on this property, which lies alongside the River Nith. The river in those days was considerably deeper between Piper street bridge and Nithvale dam than at present, and there were fewer sandbars and shallow spots. As a result boat riding was a popular summer pastime. Mr. Reid housed many rowboats and Canoes in a boathouse he constructed on the river bank, and the business flourished for a number of years. Mr. Reid went west in 1914 where he homesteaded a farm. He returned to Ayr in 1933 where he again went into the poultry business on a smaller scale. He discontinued the business some five or six years ago and had since lived retired.
Possessed of a quiet and unassuming manner, Mr. Reid was much esteemed by many friends. He was patient and kindly with children, a trait which will be well remembered by many grownups when reflecting back upon their childhood days. Previous to going west, Mr. Reid was a member of the former Stanley Street Church. Surviving are two sisters and a brother, as follows: Mrs. Margaret Carter, Detroit, Miss Violet Reid, Ayr, and James Reid, Rock Island Illinois.
The Funeral
Funeral service was held at the W. O. Ball Funeral Parlor on Tuesday afternoon, interment being in the Ayr Cemetery. Rev. R. Arthur Steed, pastor of Knox United Church, conducted the services, and the pallbearers were: Thomas Easton, G. S. Dalrymple, F. R. McGrogan, Alex Matheson, Robt. Gladstone and John Kanmacher.
