Notes |
- Mrs. Alex. Cranston Passes Away - Another Old Settler Gone
There passed away an Sunday afternoon, at her residence, Shade street, Marion Dickie, wife of the late Alex. Cranston, of Galt. The deceased lady was in the 72nd year of her age. Of late years she had been in rather delicate health, but it was not until some three weeks ago ,that she was taken seriously ill with dysentery and heart complications. Her demise was not unexpected and the fatal summons came as aforementioned, at 5.30, Sunday afternoon. The late Marion Dickie, was the youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Dickie and was born in Ayrshire, Scotland. At the age of ten years, she came to Canada with her parents, settling in what is now known as the Dickie Settlement. There Mr. and Mrs. Dickie, away back in the thirties, began the work of clearing the land and carving out a home for themselves, in the township. There the subject of this sketch lived until some fifty years ago, when she was married to the late Alexander Cranston, then a farmer on the Cedar Creek road. Mr. and Mrs. Cranston, resided on their farm, about five miles from Galt, until some twenty-two years ago, when they removed to Galt. About nine years since. the husband and father passed away, leaving a widow and six children, one daughter; Jessie, having passed away on July 26th, 1880. Between the death of the father and the mother, another child, Alexander, died, his death occurring a little over a year ago. Five children are left to mourn the loss of a kind and affectionate mother, who was held in high esteem by a very wide circle of friends. The sons are; Robert D. of San Francisco, Cal., John D. and James K., of Galt. The daughters are; Mrs. H. Dickerson and Mrs. D. H. McLean, both of Toronto. The deceased lady also it leaves two brothers. Jas. Dickle in New Zealand and Alexander in Lapierre, Michigan. The late Mrs. Cranston was an old and faithful member of Knox church and in former years was an active and energetic worker in the Woman's Missonary Society. The news of her death will be received with sincere sorrow, especially by the older members of the congregation. The funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon, at 3.30 o'clock, from deceased's late residence, Shade street, to Mount View Cemetery.
