  • Notes
    • John Brandle, resident of the Heidelberg area, died on November 8th. Born in 1824 in Mezingen, Upper department of Urach, Württemberg, he came to America in 1845 and, after a difficult journey, arrived in this area. He was hired as a shoemaker by the Wissler brothers near Lexington, and several years later, he settled down on his residence where he has lived ever since. From his marriage in the year of 1845 to Rosina Barbara Eberwein, six daughters and six sons have been born. Four of the latter have preceded their father in death. Peace be to his remains!

      __________________________

A small cider mill built by John Braendle (1824-1900) had been located on this homestead homestead property north of Heidelberg since the late 1860's. About 1878 John replaced it with a larger, more modern mill and around 1938 Elmer Braendle (John's grandson) rebuilt and relocated the cookhouse. In tracking down new information about the mill, I intereviewed Emanuel Bowman aged 82. From the age of 14 he worked periodically at the cider mill until it closed. Using this chronology then, the closing date of the Braendle cider mill is brought forward almost a decade to about 1949.
