JAMES KAY - 1820-1875
James Kay was a Galt carriage maker and politician who was born in Ayrshire, Scotland in 1820. He came to Canada with his parents when he was just a small boy and came to Galt in 1833. He learned the carriage trade from his father and while still a young man took over the business which he operated as the James Kay Carriage Shop until the time of his death. Mr. Kay was a trustee of the Galt Grammar School, later the Galt Collegiate Institute, for many years and sat on Galt village and town council from 1853 to 1861 and again from 1864 to 1866. While on council he acted as the town reeve in 1859, 1860, 1864 and 1866. Kay Street is named for him. Mr. Kay died on September 16, 1875 and is buried in Mount View Cemetery.
