Notes |
- CARTER, WILLIAM
With the death of Mr. Carter, which occurred Wednesday night, October 29, 1931, at the Galt Hospital, another of Galt's oldest citizens and one of its best known figures has passed to the great beyond. Born in Puslinch Township on December 26, 1844, he was in his 87th year. Those were the days when everybody had to work hard and young Carter worked in his 12th year, hiring out with a farmer at the magnificent wage of $2. 00 a month and working from daylight to dark. During the winter, he was chopping in the woods - fine, healthy employment, which undoubtedly contributed much to his length of days, for he was still walking around, a bit bent of course, enjoying meeting his friends as late as last summer. Mr. Carter came to Galt in 1870, when the population of the town was only about 4, 300. The citizens in those days were chiefly meat eaters and Mr. Carter conceived the idea of developing a taste for fish amongst them and embarked in the fish business, which he carried on for some years. This led him into the ice business, which he carried on from small beginnings, until it reached large proportions, his first ice house being situated where the Free Methodist Church now stand. This was the first ice house erected in Galt. Later on, he built a larger ice house on the creek that crosses the East River Road, a short distance below the soap works. Twenty-one years ago, when in his 66th year, Mr. Carter met with an accident, which closed another chapter in his life and necessitated the giving up of his business. Since that time, he had taken life quietly, gardening being his chief occupation. Possessing a strongly religious temperament he, for a number of years, worked faithfully as a local preacher in connection with the Free Methodist Church. He was a fine type of man and enjoyed the respect and esteem of all who knew him. His wife passed away three years ago. Surviving are two sons, Alfred of Boston; Herbert of Galt; three daughters, Mrs. Alfred Carter of Galt; Mrs. W. J. Baird of Birmingham, Michigan; Mrs. H. Messett of Galt; eighteen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. The funeral took place on Saturday at 2 from the home of his daughter, Mrs. Alfred Carter, 388 Dundas St., Galt to Mount View Cemetery.
-Information from the death certificate: Son of John Carter and Ann Wilson. Informant - ? Marriott of the Hespeler Rd., his son-in-law.
