• Notes

  William Topham Martin, my father's father, with his wife and five children came to America in 1857. While the ship was partially unloading at Montreal, he went up town to have his money exchanged into Canadian money, as he had been advised that he could get a better exchange at Montreal than he could in the interior. He had to climb a long flight of stairs. The exertion caused a hemorrhage and he bled to death after returning to the ship. Before dying, he requested his wife to take the children and return to England. They buried him in Montreal and concluded to go on to Galt, Ontario, where they settled. written by FW.
