• Notes

  John was proprietor of the Central Hotel. In 1900 town council had made all verandah and other projections illegal. He refused to remove it and town authorities arrived to demolish it. He tried fighting them off with a water hose and failed. The hotel's verandah was removed he later moved to Hamilton where he died in 1926. This hostelry is located midway up Main Street, and is one of the original "stopping places" of "ye olden time," and yet no better or more comfortable quarters can the weary traveller find.
