    • Lorne Seigle born in Hespeler June 11,1926. His father was employed at the Stamp & Enamelled Ware and the family lived on Hungerford Rd. He was a descendant of Abraham Clemens, the earlist Mennonite settler in the Hespeler area. He was described as being a tall, polite, quiet speaking young man. He received his early education at Hespeler Public School. Lorne developed a love of horses and was encouraged by George Gretzner, owner of the Hespeler Furniture Factory. At 16, he secured a job riding for a horse dealer from Guelph. Each weekend he would go to Stu Houlding's stable and put the horses through their paces for potential buyers. He was hired fulltime to maintain the stable, feeding, grooming and cleaning out the stalls. The work evolved into training horses and riding in jump competitions. It was here that he found the career that would become his life's work as a professional rider. Horses known as jumpers must clear every jump within a time limit. Hunters on the other hand must go over the jumps and look good doing it. A tall elegant rider, he was said to be a horseman's horseman. He rode so beautifully, he could ride a jumper fast while doing it in a way that was so graceful it was like he was riding a hunter. By the 1940s, he was riding for the Cudney family stables and winning his first victories in the show ring. Within a short time he was dominating the competition with breathtaking performances on horses such as War Bond, Kudos, Hell's a Poppin', Panama, and Copper King. A "Gentleman's Sport" at the time, he is credited with bringing the show jumping into public acceptance. Lorne competed on the Canadian Equestrian Team, but because he was a professional rider he was ineligible for the Canadian Olympic Team. Success doesn't always come easy and a new horse, Victory Bond, threw Lorne 14 times in one training day before he broke him. " It happens to all of us", he said, "if you don't fall off, you don't ride. It's a challenging sport, everyone wants to win. It's not like racing where there is a big pot at the end. This is just personal, a point of personal pride among the owners". In 1960, Lorne seigle opened his own stable in Oakville and retired from competitive riding. In Dec. 2007 he was inducted into Jump Canada's Hall of Fame. Paying tribute to Lorne was Jim Elder, 7 time Canadian Olympian, Torchy Millar, 2 time Canadian Olympian and Ian Millar. They each said their learned to ride by studing and emulating Seigle's style. Lorne Seigle, a son of Hespeler,
      passed away Jan 22, 2008.
