Notes |
- Amelia Beers Warnock was born into a family of prominence but made her own distinct mark in Canada. Taking as her nom-de-plume Katherine Hale, her mother's given names, she was a journalist, poet, essayist, music critic, recitalist and lecturer. Her books of poetry were highly acclaimed, and her books of travel observations, historic houses and cities of Canada were well regarded and serve now as poignant views of developing Canadian identity in the first half of the 20th century. As Hale noted: "My country has never become to me a place I'm just used to, but one full of hidden surprises that I'm always wanting to explore.
Born in Galt, Ontario in 1878 [1874], she was the eldest daughter of James Warnock, an industrialist who was a native of Kilmarnock, Scotland, and Katherine Hale Byard, formerly of Mobile, Alabama. She had a sister, Ann, and a brother, James Byard. Through her mother, she was related to Edward Everett Hale, who wrote The Man Without a Country. Educated in Galt schools, including Galt Collegiate Institute, she sang in local productions of Gilbert and Sullivan operettas. She also attended the Glen Mawr residential and day school in Toronto, also known as Miss Veal's school. Following graduation she travelled to New York to study opera, and also studied in Europe. As a soprano recitalist, she toured some of the English-speaking world. She also presented lectures, including ones on the topic of Canadian literature, as early as 1908....
