- THE GORE FIRE INSURANCE CO.
Among the many institutions of which Galt boasts, none are more conspicuous than the Gore Ins. Co's pal-atial and imposing structure situated on the corner of Main and Ainslie streets. The style is of a Romanesque char-acter, and is built with Connecticut brown-stone, rock-faced base up to the first storey window sills ; above this it is faced with brown pressed brick, tooled portage entry stone trimmings and Terra Cotta carvings. The corner of Main and Ainslie streets is round, having over the main entrance a heavily moulded arch, supported on two Doric columns, and over the arch the Company's name carved in mediaeval letters. This round corner is continued up above the roof, forming a round tower, roofed with Span-ish tiles and terminating in a columned and octagon lantern, with ogee top and flag staff. Total height from the side-walk about eighty-two feet. The Gore has about 125 active agents through Ontario.1a

- The hub and spoke manufacturing business first started by Thomas Todd and John Davidson in 1861 and later operated by Young and Smith. Mr. Scott purchased the business in 1873 and operated it for many years as R. Scott and Son Ltd., later the Victoria Wheel Works. The buildings were damaged by fire in 1882 but were rebuilt and enlarged. Mr. Scott continued to manage the business until 1906 when he sold it to his son-in-law George A. Dobbie. The business was located at the foot of Main St. for many years before moving to new facilities on Middleton St. in 1913.

Victoria Wheel Works
The extensive factory on Main Street manufactures all kinds of carriage materials, wheels, finished shafts and poles, plow handles, etc. This is one of the largest businesses of its kind in Western Canada. It was established in 1860, and has been a success from the start, now employing some forty hands. The extensive concern covers a ground space of three acres, including the warehouse on Queen Street. The goods manufactured by the firm find their way to all parts of the Dominion and even to Australia. The firm is composed of Robt. Scott, Esq., and his son J.H. Scott. Both gentlemen are natives of Galt, and the son may be said to have grown up in the business, and is equally with his father familiar with it in all its details. Not only as a manufacturer, but as a citizen Mr. R. Scott has always taken a deep interest in all matters tending to the advancement of Galt. The high esteem in which he is held by his fellow citizens is shown by the fact that repeatedly he has been the choice of the people to fill important and representative positions, having served in the Council and filled the mayor's chair with credit to himself and honor to the town, and at the present time has the honor of being the first mayor of Rossland, B.C.

Victoria Wheel Co., Main Street - Well may Galt be called the Manchester of Canada, for, considering the population, there are more and varied industries carried on here than any other town or city of its size in the Dominion. The business is more steady, and the mechanics as a rule own their own houses, which gives them a greater interest in the welfare of the town. Among the most prominent manufacturing industries in the town is that of the Victoria Wheel Company, which is located at the head of Main Street. This business has been established over 25 years, being commenced in a comparatively small way, and steadily expanded during the passing years. In 1866 the present Company succeeded Smith & McMillan, and since that time the business has made rapid strides forward. The premises cover about three-quarters of an acre of ground, the main building being a three-story stone structure fitted up with all the most improved and perfected machinery for this class of work. Employment is furnished for fifty skilled workmen on an average throughout the year. The Company manufactures all kinds of carriage and buggy wheels, shafts, plough handles, and articles of similar nature, which find a market throughout Ontario and the other Provinces. The work done by this Company is noted for the superior quality of the material used and the finish and excellence of workmanship displayed. The machinery is run by a 100 horse power engine, having a 140-horse power boiler. Mr. John Perry is the manager, and is a gentleman well qualified for the position. He is a native of Canada, of Scottish descent, and is a thoroughgoing and enterprising business man. Robert Scott, the chief member of the firm, is a native of Galt, and has been connected with it for fourteen years. He is also the present Mayor of Galt.
