- Letters home share Galt soldier's experience

In the 1980s, a treasure chest of papers and photos was purchased at a house auction in Cambridge containing the letters of a young soldier who was born and educated in Galt and who fought in the First World War.
Frank Eason was 23 when the war started in 1914. He was a cadet stationed in Fredericton, N.B.
In beautifully written letters home, which are excerpted below, he described to his mother and father being shipped to Europe with the 12th Battalion in the First Canadian Expeditionary Force, training Canadian soldiers in England how to shoot rifles, and going to France and Flanders and then being wounded in 1916.....

The death occurred suddenly yesterday of Major Frank Eason, beloved husband of Grace McKim of St. Anne-de-Bellevue, Que., and only son of Mrs. T. J. Easton, Blenheim Road, Galt and the late Mrs. Eason. Major Eason passed away at St. Anne-de-Bellevue military hospital of which institution he was the business manager.
Born and educated in Galt, the late Major Eason served his apprenticeship as a watchmaker with R. L. McGill. He was a member of the old 29th Battalion in Galt and in 1914 he went overseas with the first contingent as a captain. He was invalided home in 1918.
Surviving besides his wife and mother are two daughters, Francis and Marjorie both at home. Remains will arrive in Galt Thursday morning and will rest at the T. Little and Son Ltd. Funeral home, 39 Grand avenue north, where the funeral service will be held Thursday afternoon at four o'clock. Interment will take place in Mount View Cemetery.
