      Librarian, Author Dies in Hospital

      Funeral service will be Tuesday for Miss Georgina Helen Thomson, scholar, historian, librarian, author of recently published Crocus in Meadowlard Country, who died Saturday at 71.

      Her book, published last week deals with the southern Alberta Parkland area where she was raised.

      She died in Holy Cross Hospital after a lengthy illness.

      She lived in Calgary for 40 years.

      MANY ORGANIZATIONS

      She was a member of organizations ranging from the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and Friends of the Indian, a group devoted to protecting and fostering the traditions and Alberta Indians.

      Born in Galt, Ont., of Scottish parents, she travelled west with them in 1904 to settle the Thomson homestead at Parkland. When a public school opened in that Prairie country she attended it, then moved to Calgary and a year of high school. Four months in Normal School ended with a move back home and a six-year teaching career.

      In 1919, she graduated from the University of Alberta with first class honors in English and two gold medals. Later she secured her MA.
      She went directly into high school teaching at both Vermilion and Calgary. After 3 years she joined the Calgary Public Library staff, then began a 14? year career that ended with her retirement after 30 years in charge of the reference department.

      She declared once it was "the most rewarding job in Calgary" and enjoyed working with people from all walks, many of whom looked up her as a mother, aunt, confidant.

      MAIN SPEAKER


      She was named in 1955 to be the main speaker at Alberta's 50th jubilee celebrations in Parkland. The same year, then mayor of Calgary, Donald H. Mackay presented to her a citation "for distinguished and exceptional public service in the field of arts and letter."

      She was a charter member of the Calgary University Women's Club and at one time or another a member of Calgary Women's ??? Club, instrumental in campaigning for the first library in Calgary, Calgary Branch, Alberta Historical Society, Book Club, Mount Royal College Educational Club.

      She lived in recent years with her widowed sister, Mrs. War?? Chadd? Linton, 3012 5A St. S.W.

      She is also survived by one sister, Mrs. John ? (Ethel) Wilson, Parkland, one brother, D. James Thomson, Seattle, ? nieces and nephews and ? grand-nieces and nephews.

      Funeral service will be Tuesday ?? in Jacques Funeral home, ??? officiating. Burial will be at Burnsland Cemetery.
