John Boyd, the old Soldier who lived in Galt, Passes Away in Grace Hospital. Toronto.
Word has been received in Galt that John Boyd died on Thursday afternoon in a Toronto hospital. Mr. Boyd was for some years a resident of Galt, living over the store now. occupied by D. Brown, shoe dealer. While here he worked for the MacGregor-Gourlay Co., and for a time was caretaker at the Armories..His career is an Interesting one in that he was one of the survivors of the disastrous battle at Majuba Hill in the early eighties. He was at that time a member of the Gordon Highlanders, with which regiment he served in many campaigns.
Deceased was born in Scotland and when a young man enlisted with the Highlanders with whom he served as a private for 21 years, taking part in many memorable battles and campaigns. He was through the Afghan campaign and was with Lord Roberts on his famous march from Kabul to Khandahar. In the South African campaign of '81 he was under Sir George White, a captain,and General Sir Hector Macdonald, then sergeant. For Sir Hector he always maintained a very sincere respect.
Mr. Boyd was about sixty years of age, and his death took place in Grace Hospital. He leaves a wife and one sister, Miss Jean Boyd, of Galt.
