  	The name MacGregor, Gourlay & Co. first appeared in 1885 or 1886 with the renaming of Cant, Gourlay & Co. The principals were John Gourlay, Alex G. Gourlay, and Robert MacGregor, who had been in business under the Cant, Laidlaw & Co. name for about five years after Adam Cant and William W. Laidlaw had left the firm. At about the same time it seems that another business operating in the same factory, MacGregor, Gourlay & Fontaine Pin Co., was merged into MacGregor, Gourlay & Co. So far as we know, Mr. L. A. Fontaine left the business. At any rate, the pin-making business ("brass and adamantine toilet pins") continued for many years under the MacGregor, Gourlay name.

  Failed to Get the Man - The Stratford Herald says: The officers of the 29th Batt. had a unique experience Thursday. Major Cowan had asked Mr. R. McGregor, the pin man of Galt, to allow an apprentice to come to camp, and receiving as he supposed a satisfactory answer, he told the young man to come. Mr. McGregor came to the depot when the troops were leaving and threatened dire consequences on all concerned, but the gallant officers of the 29th could not be either frightened or coaxed, and refused to give up their man. The most amusing part of the programme occurred on Thursday. When the 29th was at the butte, Chief of Police Ahern, of Galt, appeared armed with a warrant for the man's arrest for leaving the employment of one R. McGregor. Accompanied by the Landon Chief, they had engaged a cab and driven to the butte. Lt. Col. Hespeler refused to give up his solider without an order from the D. A. G., which could not be obtained. The chief from Galt as a last resort came up to the camp in the evening, and took a determined stand for civil rights, but the valiant guard of the 29th refused to allow him into the lines, so that the chief had to return to Galt without his man.
