  COWEN, YOUNG was born in Belfast, Ireland, and as a child came to Toronto with his parents. He attended school there but obtained his medical degree in 1856 from the Eclectic Medical Institute of Ohio. In 1862 he was licensed by the Eclectic Medical Board. He practised in Exeter for some thirteen years, until the demands of a country practise impaired his health. In 1861 he had married Catharine, daughter of M. C. Lutz of Galt, and when he left Exeter, it was Galt he settled on to resume his practice. At that time he opened his office on West Main Street, opposite the Ferguson Block. In May of 1875 he left Galt, going first to St. Thomas, and then returning again to Exeter. This time he remained there until the fall of 1899, when he once more came back to Galt. This time his son Harry practised with him, this time using an office next door to the Reporter, in the Oddfellows Block. In June of 1902 they sold their property on South Water Street to the Bank of Commerce, and left for London. His son stayed with him only a short time before leaving for Chicago. In London he built up a large practice which he maintained, in part, right up to the day of his death. This took place on October 27, 1920, when he was in his 86th year, and was said to be the oldest practising physician in London. He was survived by his widow, and by his son Harry. Dr. Alexander D.
